Los Angeles and Home Again!

Los Angeles and Home Again!

The last leg(s) of my nomad adventure were Los Angeles, Seattle, Tuscon, then home again to Alaska! L.A. was a wonderful, sunshiney, soul talk filled, whirlwind week and a half. I recorded final vocals for the Boobs song in my dear friend John Silos’ closet (feel free to be envious of my glamorous lifestyle) and it’s going to sound AWESOME. Seriously, John is so rad and he’s working with a bunch of up-and-coming pop stars so I feel really lucky he’s a part of this album. (SHAMELESS PLUG GO LOOK AT MY FRIEND STEWART WHO HE ALSO PRODUCES—>Click!!). Also got to catch up with some of my closest friends in the world, including frolicking in the woods with the handsome gentlemen pictured below (Yeah I guess Los Angeles has some woods!!). The gentleman on the left is the INCREDIBLE Jordan King, who will be using his wizard skills to mix my album, and the young Gandalf gentleman is the AMAZING Liam Lewis, who is a dope mandolin and fiddle player. I’ve been home about a week, and it’s definitely been an adjustment transitioning back to normal routine life. It feels great to be home in a lot of ways, but I’ve already started daydreaming about my next trip…or move?    ...

Nashville!

Nashville!

It’s been a whirlwind week! Such a surreal feeling running into so many familiar faces in an unfamiliar place. I was fortunate enough to record with some wonderful people at White Bridge Studios– these are musicians I played with in college and it felt like a class reunion in the best way. We recorded “Escape Route”, “Box of Bones” and bass and violin for “Simple Things”. Thank you to Tommy Leland, Gavin O’Broin, Ali Veech, Jason Chambliss, Elisabeth Beckwitt, Russ Sternglass, and Lars Thorson for sharing your talents and brains with these songs. I keep oscillating between feeling nostalgic and grateful, which are really the same thing but on different dimensions. I’ve been having a lot of conversations on this trip. Listening to people’s stories of where they’re at and how they feel about this stage in life and careers. Although my friends have diverged and pursued different paths in the realm of the music industry, there’s a string of phrases that keep bubbling up. “I’m not doing what I want” “I don’t know what my next step is” “I don’t know where I should move” “Everybody’s getting engaged. Shit.” As an outsider looking in, all of these individuals would be classified as successful contributors to society. Making a life for themselves, forging ahead in an industry filled with uncertainty. But after just a few minutes of talking, we all had similar things to say. The same insecurities, the same fears, the same unsteadiness that comes with working in a field without corporate ladders to cling to and climb. I guess what it all comes down to, is nobody knows what they’re doing. Even if their Instagram is sparkly and impressive, even if they are managing to work full time in music, even if they have a sweet job and a great apartment with two Keurigs. I feel so lucky to have people in my life willing to open up to me, willing to have bigger conversations to try and figure out what our role is here in our communities and on this crazy blue marble of a planet. All we can do is take it one step at a time, tell people you love them, and remember to breathe (preferably with a glass of wine in your hand).   Thanks for reading. You are...

String Quartets and Raisinets

String Quartets and Raisinets

What a crazy weekend! Shot footage for the “Boobs” music video, which mostly involved me wearing all the scarves I own, boxes of Raisinets, and frolicking in the snow in a sun dress. I may have also waltzed in a coffee shop with a “Caution Wet Floor” sign. Anyway, it’s going to be a really fun video and I’m very excited to share it with you all hopefully in the relatively near future! Will post pictures and promo clips soon! Also, had the best recording session of my life yesterday at Herd Studios in Roxbury. Got to work with some incredible musicians, including Avery Ballotta who brought me to tears with his quartet arrangement for “Lost and Found”. Just gorgeous. I can’t believe I get to work with these people. After the session, I proceeded to eat nachos and not even pretend to care about football. BUT THAT HALF TIME SHOW WAS SO GOOOOD. Seriously, though, I don’t know how I am even the same species as Beyonce because that lady is UNREAL. Thanks so much for reading! Will write again soon.  ...

New Video, and Hello Boston!

New Video, and Hello Boston!

Pamela Cumming and I have been working steadily on getting our “We are Pamily” EP released, and we are nearing the final mixing stages!! We are so excited to share this music with you and couldn’t have done it without our Kickstarter supporters and some amazing musicians along the way. Many thanks to Framed Photography (Jason McNamara) for creating such a beautiful video, Graham Greer, Stephane McAlear, Dylan Groulx, and Glenn Forester for the work you have done, and are doing, to make this EP a beautiful reality!!!   Here’s a little sneak peek of what’s to come- hope you enjoy! Almost a week has passed since I arrived in Boston and I just feel so incredibly lucky to have such great humans in my life. It’s been such a surreal experience running into old friends at intersections, in coffee shops, catching up as if no time has passed at all. Working with my dear friends Mike Adams and Seung Hoon has been a freaking dream come true. Yesterday was our first session, and I would honestly be happy releasing what we got done in that short two hour session (but we’re going to add some cool things so that’s not going to happen quite yet!). We recorded ukulele and vocals for “Simple Things” which is going to be the title track of the album. The choice to start with “Simple Things” ended up being a fortuitous and accidentally-symbolic beginning to what I am sure is going to be a long, challenging, and rewarding creative process. I feel like I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing, and I haven’t felt that way for a while. So much love– thanks for reading about my feelings. You look dashing today 🙂...

Happy New Year! Blue Loon Show January 9

Happy New Year! Blue Loon Show January 9

I’m incredibly stoked to be playing with some of my favorite human beings on January 9th at the Blue Loon!! This show is near and dear to my heart because it means goodbye for a little while to my hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska and some of the loveliest people on the planet. On January 26th, I’ll be traveling to Boston, MA to work with a dear friend and producer, Mike Adams, on my upcoming album and children’s album.   I quit my real job. I got a one-way ticket. YIKES THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING.   I’ve been talking about getting away for a while and just letting myself have a writer’s retreat, and although that’s not exactly what this trip is going to be, I’m looking forward to having some head space to really think about where I’m going in my life and the kind of career I want to pursue. After Boston, I’m planning to visit Nashville, Los Angeles, and a few little places in between to get an idea of where I want to live and what my next steps are going to look like. I’m definitely anxious to be taking this kind of risk and saying no to a steady income, but I know if I don’t do this I’ll kick myself later.   Happy New Year to you all! Wishing you all the best and then some :). Here’s to taking risks and pursuing what you love!   Love,...
